Festival of the Birthday

My Lovely friends totally spoiled me on Wednesday. I was treated to a gorgeous evening of cocktails and yummy appetizers , followed by shopping at my most favorite store on earth. With many bags in hand, we convened back at my friend Kel's house. I walked into her garden, and there, set amongst the trees was this gorgeous table laid with champagne and sushi and 3 magnificent Proteas resting in balloon vases. We sat for hours laughing and talking and I floated into bed in the knowledge that there is nothing quite like a beautiful evening with my girlfriends (with a little shopping thrown in for good cheer!)

Cheers girls!

Anthropologie Anthology

I like to think I have a fairly eclectic style, however, whenever I walk into anthropologie, I feel the urge to shop up big time all in one hit! I have a secret regret that I did never snare a job as one of their people responsible for "finding" their "found objects". Can you imagine what fun fun fun that would have been. It is fun enough when I find them in my local Highland Park Retail Outlet!

More Jacqueline Coates

I could not resist the urge to post yet more of these images of paintings by my most favorite artist, Jacqueline Coates. I have her on my mind right now, so here she is again!

Jacqueline Coates

I remember the first time I saw a painting by Jacqueline Coates. My breath was literally taken away. It was in a friend's dining room in Balmain, Sydney. I immediately went home and researched how I could get one for myself.
We moved to Chicago soon after and I never did make it down to South Australia to meet her and purchase a painting of my own. Still on my list of things to do though.
I would also love to do one of her weekend workshops. I believe they are amazing. I love it that she wants to share her craft with others. When I get home I will be first in line!

Heavenly Dining

Jane's
1655 West Cortland Street,
Chicago

My Neighbor and business partner, Annie, introduced me to this heavenly place called Jane's on West Cortland Street, Bucktown, Chicago.

My oh my, it took my breath away!!
I adore all white interiors so my jaw dropped at the site of white penny tiles on the floor, white pressed metal ceilings, and white marble counter tops and black table tops. It was as though the designers had met and decided to create Kellie Rigney's perfect space on earth!
Artichoke shaped tiny crystal chandeliers everywhere sent me on a mad search for ones just like them for my own kitchen. Can you imagine how happy I was when I unearthed the source?

Oh and the food is incredible!!

BG- Bergdorf Goodman
754 5th Avenue,
New York, New York

What could possibly be more glamorous than a long long lunch with girlfriends on the 7th floor of Bergdorf Goodman's looking out over Central Park in New York City?

This was the precise location for my reunion with 2 beautiful friends of mine from England last month. We sat for hours sipping wine and nibbling as we recapped over years of this and that.

We had no urge to be anywhere else, such was the serene, salon like atmosphere of this pale blue wonderland. We were at the very very tippy top of the town and loving every minute!

Peace in Aqua

I borrowed these images from one of the blogs that I am truly, madly, deeply devoted to- Erin Olson's House of Turquoise. These images are of rooms by husband and wife team Jesse Carrier and Mara Miller.

I am not sure what it is about this sea foam blue color that I am so inexorably drawn to.
I felt the pull stronger than ever when I first moved to Chicago 3 years ago. Looking back now I remember looking at Lake Michigan in the dead of the coldest winter and thinking what a truly beautiful color it was.

I was so tempted to swathe my entire first floor in this color, but somehow it felt too.... well...., blue. Sad in some way. I think I was home sick. I settled on touches here and there but warmer tones prevailed.

I am headed home to Sydney in 5 short months  and that "blue" has gone out of the aqua and I just can't get enough of it. My new house in Sydney will be a tribute to Erin Olson- A House of Turquoise! I will need all the reminders I can get of Chicago and the amazing crystal blue of the Great Lake Michigan.

Flowers Really Do Make you Happy!

On Saturday I receieved these flowers from my dear friend Terri. They were picked from her very own garden, no less!

Its Tuesday and I am still moved to smile each time I pass them. Could this be a real phenomena? Do flowers really make you happy?

A team of scientific researchers led by Jeanette Haviliand-Jones has conducted experiments to say that "giving someone flowers really does improve their mood, not just at the moment of delivery, but long afterwards."

Thanks Terri!!

A Teacup Full Of Posy

Yesterday Lori, my dear friend and lover of all things vintage, sent me this gorgeous teacup packed with roses and berries. The prettiest little arrangement ever! We were hosting a family cricket day at our home in Chicago, so it was the perfect centre piece for our lunchtime spread.

Girl Fever

I am always drawn to bright sunny rooms.  I detest being in my basement. Could that have something to do with the fact that my laundry room is down there??

I am a lover of pastel, girly colors. My husband claims not to mind how I chose to decorate, as long as the sofa is deep and the screen is large and flat! My ideal Man!

Sadia's London Home

My friend Sadia has a truly beautiful home in London. I really love the way she has decorated it using treasures she has collected personally from places around the world from India to Morrocco.

The 4 level home was painstakingly gutted and refurbished a couple of years ago to create a truly luxurious, yet relaxed and inviting space.

Our friendship was forged over shopping trips in our lunch hours during our somewhat brief careers as lawyers. Our true passion for home interiors,  and beautiful things in general, is a connection we have that transcends the geographical distance between us.

I cannot wait to take her to some of Chicago's hot shopping spots in August!

Cursive- New York

Every now and again one comes across a store where one can spend ages pawing over their little treasures.

A store called "Cursive" within the magical ABC Carpet and Home is such a place. Since childhood I have LOVED beautiful stationary. I save pretty note cards as though they are treasures.

Cursive New York provided me with a treasure trove of yummy paper and writing products. I was transfixed!!

Whilst shopping there, I met MK, the store manager, who was equally enamored with the Bauble Nest jewels I was wearing. We held a little mutual appreciation club meeting for a while and then parted ways. I didn't make it to the new Cursive Store on Grand Central Station, but I believe it is amazing.

My New Entry Way

It's official. I am obsessed. I adore new furniture and have been spying these pieces for weeks now. Today they are mine. All mine!!

Heritage Trail Mall at 410 ridge road, Wilmette, Il is my favourite place to shop. I purchased the mirror from Jodie's booth and the table from Alexis Vintiques who also has a booth at Heritage Trail.

My 2 year old has been well trained and calls it "the treasure store"!!
I should add that the jar with the gold lid belonged to my favourite Aunty Pat. It is actually Estee Lauder packaging from the 50s. Nothing like that 50s glamour. You can still smell the face cream when you open the jar. The Blue lamp is one of a pair from Monica Child's booth at Heritage Trail and the vase is my birthday present from my mum Judy in Sydney.

UFO's

I am in the process of trying to complete Unfinished objects (UFO's) lying around my house. I started this second pale pink Chrysanthemum to sell in Seagrass in Winnetka a year ago, but got bored with it and shelved it.

Dug it out yesterday and its nearly done. Maybe someone will buy it and then I can buy the console table I have been admiring in Alexis without any guilt at all!!!!

It is 36"x 36" oil on canvas. Price $350(US)

Sophie Belle

To her mum Lori, this dog is the prettiest girl in the world!!!!!!!!!  I painted this 12"by 12" oil on canvas from a photograph. I wish I could have captured her dress better. On her back are the words "Material Girl" written in rhinestones. Sophie Belle is the best dressed dog in Chicago.

Just a few little pieces that I bought at Fishs Eddy NYC with my birthday money from my Mum in Sydney. Pale pink lysianthas.  So pretty!!

Fishs Eddy New York

Also on Broadway, very near to Union Square in New York City, is the fabulous store, Fishs Eddy. Being the only one in the world, it felt like an extra special experience to shop there.

The store was decorated with loads of gorgeous vintage style portraits of glamorous women from bygone eras. It felt like being in my Nan's kitchen with its soft pastel crockery and pretty plates.

Gorgeous colorful glassware and crockery sent me into a bit of a tail spin. How was I going to get it all home to Chicago without breaking it?

Where there is a will there is a way!  All of my special little finds, ranging from a gorgeous hand pressed turquoise vase, to soap dishes and votives made it home intact!!! More souvenirs
of my time in the USA! Check it out www.fishseddy.com.
